MORRIS RUTHERGLEN CLASSIC LIQUEUR MUSCAT

For over 155 years, the Morris family has established itself as one of Australia’s most esteemed winemaking dynasties, with their name now synonymous with ‘Liqueur Muscat’. Today, David Morris, the fifth generation to lead the winery, upholds his family's remarkable legacy.

In 1859, George Francis Morris founded a four-hectare vineyard and winery near Rutherglen, a charming town in northeastern Victoria, set on ancient red loam over red and yellow podzolic clay soils. Rutherglen, with its gold rush history, was pivotal in the region's wine industry boom during the 1850s. By 1885, Morris had expanded to over 80 hectares, making it the largest wine producer in the Southern Hemisphere. However, the spread of phylloxera in 1890 devastated the region’s vineyards. In 1897, George's son, Charles Hugh Morris, planted a new vineyard near the original site, funding the venture by selling his prized showjumping horse, which remains the company’s logo today.

Charles Tempest Morris took over during the 1930s, steering the company through the Depression and World War II, and his son, Charles Henry Morris, became head winemaker in 1953. In 1993, Charles’ son David assumed leadership. In 2016, Morris Wines was acquired by Casella Family Brands, also known for owning Peter Lehmann Wines.

In the glass, this wine displays a deep brown core with a glowing amber rim. The nose reveals a rich yet fresh bouquet of rose petals, preserved fruit, and nuts. The palate is filled with luscious flavours of sweet spices and dried fruit, complemented by a long, lingering finish with a hint of oak. It captivates with its rich, intense flavours. With an average age of around eight years, the Classic Muscat offers a balance of freshness and varietal character, enhanced by subtle complexity gained from time spent ageing in barrel.
